The Department of Physical Education and Sports Sciences came into existence since the inception of the university in 1929 and then became teaching department from 1974 onwards. It contributes in qualitative enhancement and sustenance in producing Physical Education graduates. Promotion of Physical Education and Sports in the University is a three-tier activity. At the first level this department is running courses and research programme. At the second level it is conducting inter departmental tournaments and sports for all the ten faculties. The department is organizing South Zone /All India Inter University tournaments every year allotted by AIU. The third level is participating in the Inter University, State and National Level tournaments in twenty five disciplines of both men and women. Our achievements at competitive sports is remarkable, our university teams secured a maximum of 14 positions in ten Games and Sport events in the Inter University tournaments which includes Ballbadmintion, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Kabaddi Kho-Kho, Tennis, Power Lifting, Weight Lifting and Athletics, besides our team bagged various positions in National, State and Inter Collegiate Level tournaments. One of our students (Mr.G.Nirmal) of I B.P.E. has been selected to be placed in the under 19 Indian Football Camp held at Goa. Another one of our university Hockey player named Mr. M. Sambathkumar represented India and participated in the Asian Junior Hockey tournament held at Kulalambur, Malaysia. Besides, Mr. S.M. Rafeeq and Mr. C.K. Somanna participated in the world hockey series by representing Chennai Cheetahs and Karnataka Lions Team respectively. Our department has produced 150 Ph.D; more than 1000 M.Phils; Published around 500 articles; Presented 511 papers and organized 7 Seminars and 4 Workshops at National and International level.
It is supported by the UGC under SAP – DRS - I.
